The Evil Eye In Ergani Workshop

IMG_1633 - Αντίγραφο

The evil eye is a curse believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury.

The idea expressed by the term causes many different cultures to pursue protective measures against it. The concept and its significance vary widely among different cultures, primarily in West Asia.

It was a widely extended belief among many Mediterranean and Asian tribes and cultures. Charms and decorations with eye-like symbols known as nazars, which are used to repel the evil eye are a common sight across Greece, Turkey, Albania, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco,Southern Italy (Naples), the Levant, and Afghanistan

The evil eye, known as μάτι (mati), “eye”, as an apotropaic visual device, is known to have been a fixture in Greece dating back to at least the 6th century BC, when it commonly appeared on drinking vessels.Untill now in Greece, the evil eye is cast away through the process of xematiasma (ξεμάτιασμα), whereby the “healer” silently recites a secret prayer.

We chose the evil eye symbol for our workshop’s summer window because it is a part of our cultural identity and the colors that we used- white, turquoise and blue- are the true colors of the original Greek summer.

Doll making seminar with a special request

Last summer Magdalena, the co-owner of Live-Bio, came at the workshop with Cristina, a beautiful young lady from Spain.

Cristina is a founder and teacher at iKidz, which is an academy of English language for kids in Madrid, Spain. She believes children learn better and faster through playing games and having fun. That is how she teaches in her classes. iKidz is not only an academy, it is a family. Children feel comfortable, happy and they are more likely to learn in such environment. Learning English becomes exciting and fun rather than a boring task they have to do.

Cristina stayed with Live-Bio in August and September 2015. She came for a “working holiday”. During her stay, she took part in the brainstorming sessions organised by Live-Bio. Through this creative interaction with others some great ideas were born, which she then went to pursue after coming back to Spain.

a poem…

A smaller world

Nikiforos Vrettakos
A smaller world
(Diary, translated by Rick Μ. Newton)

Ι seek a shore where Ι can fence in
a patch of the horizon with
trees or reeds. Where, gathering infinity,
Ι can have the sense that: there are nο machines
or very few; there are nο soldiers
or very few; there are nο weapons
or very few, and those few aimed at the exit
of the forests with wolves; or that there are nο merchants
or very few at remote
points οn the earth where
paved roads have not yet been laid.
God hopes that
at least in the poets᾿ sobs paradise will never cease to exist.

meet ERGANI!

ERGANI is a doll inspired by the simple forms of the archaic art of painting.

It may be a woman who is dancing or spinning.

Its body is made of cotton, its clothes of linen and hand-woven textile; decorated with embroidery. Its hair depicts the hair locks of the ancient statues.

Its name originates from one of the many names of the ancient Greek goddess Athena, who taught humans the art of weaving.

Both its design and structure are an original creation of ERGANI Weaving Workshop!

and this is our first entry to Sew Mama Sew Spectacular Softies Contest!

a handwoven zoo!

We love animals, we love weaving!
Here is a collection of some of the handwoven animals we made the last three years.

Maria makes the patterns, I weave the fabric, together we sew, decorate with embroidery, crochet, felting…

…and other animals.

Some of them are custom orders, some are gifts and some are just for fun!

You can buy them at our etsy shop!
